Get into the Ferragosto mood in London, at Luce e Limoni, one of the leading Italian restaurants in Little Italy.
In Italy, 15 August is not just another summer’s day; it’s Ferragosto, a beloved holiday steeped in tradition, sunshine and, of course, delicious food.
The origins of Ferragosto go all the way back to Ancient Rome. Emperor Augustus introduced the Feriae Augusti in 18 BC as a period of rest after the hard work of harvest. Workers were given a break, horses and oxen were decorated with flowers, and celebrations wet on for several days. Over time, the Catholic Church adopted the date to mark the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, blending pagan and religious customs into one nationwide celebration.
Today, Ferragosto is synonymous with the height of the Italian summer. Cities empty as Italians flock to the seaside, lakes and mountains. Families and friends gather for long lunches, sizzling barbecues and picnics that seem to last all afternoon. It’s also the perfect excuse for a little indulgence: think heaped plates of pasta, fish, grilled meats and delicious desserts, all washed down with chilled wine or a spritz.
In many towns, Ferragosto is marked with festivals, parades and spectacular fireworks displays. Coastal resorts bustle with life, while inland villages host sagre, local food festivals celebrating everything from watermelon to roasted pork. The atmosphere is joyful, relaxed, and tinged with that particular Italian magic of living in the moment.
Here in the UK capital, we may not have the Mediterranean landscapes, but we can still embrace the spirit of Ferragosto. It’s a time to pause, gather around a table and enjoy a meal that celebrates summer’s bounty, whether that’s fresh burrata with aubergine capoata, a slow-roasted rump of lam or a bowl of homemade pasta.
At renowned London Italian restaurant Luce e Limoni in Little Italy Ferragosto is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder of why we love Italian food and culture: the togetherness, the generosity and the joy of making every meal a celebration.
So this August, join us in raising a glass…and buon Ferragosto!
