If you’re visiting the Elixia Festival, make sure you find time for lunch or dinner at one of the best Sicilian Italian restaurants in London.
Each spring, London’s cultural calendar comes alive with festivals that celebrate creativity in all its forms. One of the most inspiring is the Elixir Festival, returning in April 2026 for three vibrant weeks at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, the Lilian Baylis Studio in Angel and Sadler’s Wells East in Stratford. The festival brings together performances, talks, workshops and films that explore an intriguing theme: how dance evolves as our bodies and minds change over time.
Rather than focusing solely on youth, the Elixir Festival celebrates movement at every stage of life. International artists, professional companies and community dance groups all contribute to a programme that encourages audiences to think differently about ageing, creativity and expression. It’s a refreshing perspective, and one that has helped the festival build a devoted following among dance lovers and cultural explorers.
The 2026 edition opens with a particularly moving event: the UK premiere of Kontakthof – Echoes of ’78. This production revisits a landmark work by the legendary choreographer Pina Bausch, bringing together original cast members from the 1978 performance. The piece blends live performance with archival footage from the dancers’ earlier years, creating a powerful dialogue between past and present.
Another highlight of the Elexir Festival sees acclaimed Canadian dancer Louise Lecavalier return to the festival with a brand-new solo performance, danses vagabondes. Inspired by the writings of Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli, the work promises a captivating mix of athleticism and reflection.
Community participation also plays an important role throughout the festival. Sadler’s Wells’ much-loved Company of Elders presents a special programme of performances, while workshops invite participants aged 60 and over to explore dance for themselves. Across the venues, visitors can also take part in a variety of free classes, from flamenco and Bollywood to lindy hop and Argentine tango.
With screenings, discussions and collaborative performances completing the programme, Elixir Festival offers an inspiring look at the enduring power of movement and creativity.
If you’re planning to attend performances in Angel or nearby venues, it’s worth making a full day of your visit. A stone’s throw away in Clerkenwell, Luce e Limoni is an authentic Sicilian Italian restaurant with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. After an afternoon of dance and inspiration, it’s the perfect place to relax over a delicious lunch or dinner!
