The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration is presenting the first-ever solo exhibition by acclaimed illustrator and artist MURUGIAH.
One of the most exciting new cultural destinations in Clerkenwell has recently opened its doors, and is already hosting a remarkable exhibition. The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, the UK’s only public arts organisation dedicated entirely to illustration, has relocated to its beautifully restored new home at New River Head in Clerkenwell, a stone’s throw from our restaurant. We’re excited, and we urge our regulars to go take a look. To mark their exciting new chapter, the Centre is presenting the very first solo exhibition by illustrator and artist MURUGIAH.
Visitors to the exhibition are invited into a vivid and imaginative world populated by unforgettable characters, including figures with flower, elephant and skull-shaped heads. MURUGIAH’s distinctive visual style draws inspiration from a fascinating mix of influences, from his Sri Lankan heritage and Welsh upbringing to childhood memories of video games, Saturday morning cartoons and pop-punk music. These elements combine with references to cinema, design and art to create works that are playful, thought-provoking and deeply personal.
The exhibition showcases the breadth of MURUGIAH’s creativity, featuring painting, sculpture, animation and printed works. Although his imagery is often fantastical and surreal, the themes explored are universal. Through bold visual storytelling, he reflects on identity, belonging, heritage and the emotional challenges of modern life. The result is an exhibition right here in Clerkenwell that encourages visitors to consider their own experiences while enjoying a highly original artistic vision.
The show also marks the beginning of a new programme of exhibitions highlighting contemporary UK-based illustrators, reinforcing the Quentin Blake Centre’s commitment to supporting ambitious and innovative creative talent.
The Quentin Blake Centre itself is well worth a visit. Following a major restoration project, the historic site now includes exhibition galleries, an extensive public illustration library and welcoming public spaces dedicated to celebrating the art of illustration in all its forms. It represents an exciting addition to Clerkenwell’s already thriving cultural scene.
After exploring the exhibition, why not continue your day with a Sicilian Italian meal at nearby Luce e Limoni? Just a short walk from the Centre, our restaurant offers the perfect place to relax and reflect on what you’ve seen. Enjoy authentic Mediterranean flavours, carefully selected Sicilian wines and warm hospitality in the heart of Clerkenwell. Art and great food make a wonderful combination, and a visit to the MURUGIAH exhibition combined with an authentic Sicilian meal provides the perfect excuse to enjoy both!
