Few historical objects can claim to tell a story quite like the Bayeux Tapestry. Almost 1,000 years old, nearly 70 metres long and packed with embroidered human figures, animals, ships and battles, it is one of the most extraordinary surviving records of medieval European history. And now, for a limited time, London has an exceptionally rare chance to see it.
From September 2026 to July 2027, the Bayeux Tapestry is being displayed at the British Museum, following a historic loan agreement with France. It is the first time the famous tapestry has been displayed in the UK since it was made. So, what makes it worth seeing?
For starters, it is an astonishing piece of storytelling. Created in the 11th century, the Bayeux Tapestry (many insist that it is actually an embroidery) depicts the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, including the dramatic Battle of Hastings. Rather than reading a dry history book, visitors can follow the story scene by scene, complete with kings, soldiers, ships, horses and some wonderfully expressive medieval characters.
The Bayeux Tapestry is also fascinating as an object in its own right. Imagine producing something almost 70 metres long without modern machinery, computers or even a comfortable office chair! The workmanship, detail and sheer scale give you a remarkable insight into the skills and visual culture of the medieval period.
And then there is the historical perspective. The Bayeux Tapestry offers a powerful visual account of one of the most important turning points in English history. It raises questions about who created it, what story it intended to tell and how people in the 11th century understood the events unfolding around them. In other words, it is not simply something to look at; it gives you plenty to think about.
The British Museum is hosting the Bayeux Tapestry alongside objects from its own collection and other loans, helping visitors explore the wider world surrounding the Norman Conquest.
